JAMES WAY BEAUTIFICATION - PISMO BEACH, CA

One of the City Council’s top goals is to “build on the strength of our local community to preserve the City’s ‘Classic California’ charm and ensure an exceptional quality of life for residents.” To achieve this goal, the James Way Beautification Project included the removal of unusable hardscape and replacing it with landscaping along the ocean side of the James Way corridor, from Shamrock Lane to Crest Drive. On the opposite side of the street, dilapidated tree planters were removed and replaced with new tree plantings at the sidewalk level. Additional improvements included restriping the roadway and updating all curb ramps for ADA accessibility. The streetscape is used frequently as a trail for walking, running, biking, and catching the bus to school.

ANNA’S HOME - PASO ROBLES, CA

Community, love, and support have led to an improved play space at Anna’s Home; a supportive housing program that provides a safe and sober living environment for women and children to be reunited. This project began with resident surveys and a design vision from BEK Collective, and was brought to life through the collaborative efforts of the local chapter and members of the California Landscape Contractors Association. The key focal piece is a monarch butterfly hand painted by Tara Feld.
All of the efforts were a stunning display of community helping community.

Join the volunteer team of BEK Collective, Site One, 805 West, Madrone Landscape, Purlieu Concrete, Holliday Rock, Paul Warner Concrete Pumping, and Schmiedeberg Designs in helping Anna’s Home achieve its program goals: Donate to Restorative Partners.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. SCULPTURE GARDEN - MARINA, CA

A place where people of all ages, abilities, and cultures can gather and connect in support of peace, responsibility, love, and fairness. To access the sculpture, a sunlit path marches forward, across eight, rhythmic, concrete bands etched with “I have a dream”. This path leads to a circular plaza and is framed by the embrace of “We Rise,” a rising, stone, seat wall. At the center, sits the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sculpture by artist, Barrington McLean and granite plaques set upon a stone covered base. The central space includes lighting, seating and is next to an open lawn area for flexibility to accommodate gatherings— small or large. We learned quickly that just as important as a space for the sculpture itself, was to create a space for the beloved community.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY - CAYUCOS, CA

Low budget, DIY, locally sourced, drought tolerant, and low maintenance material selections define this tiny garden. Construction waste rubble and piping repurposed as low walls and planters. The wildlife friendly garden includes a resident bat house and accommodates ‘Soup’ the turtle. Both help to provide natural pest control amidst the alternative, native, no-mow lawn. Flexible seating areas support gatherings of one to one dozen friends and family members of all ages.

SBP AIRPORT - SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA

The ‘Nine sisters’ - the iconic, and named volcanic peaks rhythmically guide travelers between security checkpoint and gates, just as they guide planes to and from the Pacific Ocean with the prevailing winds. Landscape detailing and plant selections inspired by the regional character of nearby beaches and the strong agricultural history.

THE PYRAMID - NIPOMO, CA

The ubiquitous lawn: when pinched and pulled towards the sky, creates a bold, bright, and daring pinnacle of opportunity. Drought tolerant, evergreen, and low maintenance, it unabashedly delivers the basic needs we seek, while challenging the traditional and modern notions of a garden. With dynamic lines and daring proportions, the garden becomes an integral memory of the home, poised to invite interaction, initiate dialogue and inspire curiosity.
